Enchanting Ceramics: Clay Candelabras on Display at NCECA 2023

Who knew that a trip to the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) in Cincinnati would lead us on a fascinating journey into the history and significance of ceramic candelabras?

Well, buckle up, folks, because that's precisely what happened! In this article, we'll explore the many candelabras exhibited at this year's conference. And, we’ll learn about the Candelabra’s history, delving into the origins of these intricate masterpieces and the reasons behind their existence.

The Allure of the Candelabra

A Brief History: How Candelabras Came to Be

Candelabras have been around for centuries, gracing dining tables and mantelpieces with their elegant presence. But candelabras were also commonly used in a floor standing configuration, helping to provide light in long hallways, and dark stairways of castles, churches, or homes.

The word "candelabra" itself is derived from the Latin "candelabrum," which means "candlestick." Historically, candelabras served a practical purpose: to hold candles and provide light. However, their ornamental aspect soon took center stage, and they became symbols of wealth and sophistication.

The Role of Ceramics in Candelabras

Ceramics and candelabras share a long and intertwined history. Ceramic candelabras are prized for their durability, versatility, and the nearly endless array of colors and glazes that can be used to create unique and stunning pieces.

Here are some key reasons why ceramic candelabras have stood the test of time:

  • Aesthetic appeal: Ceramic candelabras can be molded into intricate shapes, allowing for truly one-of-a-kind designs.

  • Heat resistance: Ceramic materials can withstand high temperatures, making them ideal for holding candles.

  • Longevity: High-quality ceramics are less prone to breakage and can last for generations.
